Willet
Hauser Studios is very proud to announce our recent partnering with renowned
stained glass designer Dieterich Spahn. Dieterich’s focus will include
contemporary designs for today’s architecture as well as traditional
liturgical art.
Dieterich Spahn was born
in Cologne, Germany. He studied liturgical arts including stained glass
window design, mosaic mural and design for sacred spaces with Prof. Karl
Scherer and Prof. Werner Lenzen. Prof. Lenzen, a Bauhaus educated teacher,
taught the school of thought, artistic principles and philosophy that
represented the Bauhaus. Prof. Scherer, a student of John Thorn Prikker,
considered the great innovator of contemporary stained glass, taught this
art in monumental scale and form. Studies with Prof. Georg Meistermann
taught one to integrate contemplative stained glass into contemporary
architectural buildings.
Dieterich arrived in the
United States in 1961 to work for German-born artist Peter Dohmen in St.
Paul, MN. He assisted Mr. Dohmen in the completion of numerous large stained
glass window commissions, foremost being the stained glass windows for the
Valparaiso University Chapel in Valparaiso, Indiana. Work has been completed
with noted architectural firms and nationally renowned liturgical consultant
Frank Kacmarcik on several large projects. Many of the works have received
national recognition in architectural journals for their contemporary design
excellence in integrating stained glass in today's worship space.
To date, Dieterich has
completed over 3,700 stained glass windows for churches, residences and
public buildings throughout the United States.
Needless to say, Willet
Hauser is thrilled with this great addition to their team of artisans.
